Men's Elite
The Men's Elite Competition is aimed at the smaller national teams, those who might compete in World Rugby Div 2 or Div 3 as well as development teams from larger nations.
It is also suitable for the top amateur and semi-pro teams who would usually enter this competition level.
Our aim is to create a competition where every player, every squad is tested in some way to aid player development and opportunity.
Men's Open
The Men's Open Competition will ferature 8 teams competing in two pools of four.
This competition is suitable for all adult teams at an amateur standard. Those teams who enter similar competitions across other invitational events around the world will be perfectly matched.
Women's
We are keen to create two women's competitions to match those of the men (Elite and Open) however, we understand the smaller player base can lead to mismatches in tournaments or teams playing in very small groups creating frustration for teams.
Our aim is to create a competition where every player, every squad is tested in some way to aid player development and opportunity and so to that end we will be working closely with teams who register interest to create a sporting competion(s) that is meaningful to all.
Youth
As part of our Outreach and Opportunity activities, local school and youth U18 teams will be invited to take part in training sessions in the lead up to the competition.
The day before the main competition these boys and girls will go head to head in a one day, fast paced competition for the Great Lakes Youth Title.
All youth participants will be given free entry to the two day Great Lakes Sevens with the Cup Final in each category taking place in the Main Stadium during Finals Day.
Structure
Men's Elite - 8 teams competing in 2 pools of 4
Men's Open - 8 teams competing in 2 pools of 4
Women's - a collaborative approach will be taken with teams to ensure meaningful competition however we aim to mirror the same competition structure as the men
Youth - Boys and Girls U18, 8 teams in each competing in 2 pools of 4
Team Composition
Our experience of tournaments has shown us that in many events, there is some amount of team withdrawal, usually due to injury. To help avoid teams withdrawing because of this we are increasing the numbers of players that can be used by a team from the usual 12 to squads of up to 15 players and 3 support staff. Only 12 players from the squad may be selected for each match.
